Frustrated NIS pensioner has had enough

Dear Editor,

I am writing out of grave concern on my mother’s behalf. Her name is Mavis Algu of lot 36 Blairmont #4 Settlement West Bank, Berbice and her NIS # is B-9156852 she is the recipient of survivor’s Pension since 1995 after the death of my father on 22nd May 1994.

She last received payment on December 2008, her life certificates were submitted as usual but to date no payment was made to her for 2009.

Upon querying with the office at Fort Wellington and the Head Office at Brickdam over and over they repeatedly asked for her life certificate and that was sent no less than four times subsequently to FWLO.

This is now end of July and still no payment is ready for her, and after querying dozens of times they are saying now they don’t have any record of my dad death certificate. I sent it via FWLO, but I am told I have to send it direct to Georgetown.

This is the limit, my poor mom is fed up waiting for what she is entitled to. I wonder if they are waiting to see her death certificate as they are slowly killing her with frustration, bills to pay and no money and all they seem to be doing is dragging their feet on this matter.

Calling at NIS office and talking to them is like throwing water on duck’s back, all they say is we will call you back and they never do.

You call them today they are working on it still, you call them next week they need another life certificate, you call them one month later they need another life certificate, you call them four months later they need the death certificate, you call them seven months later and you are back at square one.

I would be most grateful if someone in authority can look into this matter urgently.
