Five injured in three-vehicle smash up

At least five persons were rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital last evening following a three-vehicle smash up which occurred on the Leonora Public Road, West Coast Demerara.

Reports are that the incident occurred some time around 19:00hours.
Among those injured are Steven Clement, 18; Andre Sparman; Jamal Bruce, the driver of one of the vehicles, PGG 9503; and the other drivers, Richard Manickchand and Navin Panday.
Clement, Bruce, Sparman and Panday were rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where up to press time they were still being treated. The other injured man, Manickchand, was initially rushed to the Leonora Cottage Hospital but was subsequently taken to a private hospital for further treatment.
Eyewitnesses said that two of the vehicles involved in the accident were heading toward Parika when one attempted to overtake the other and ended up into the path of another car which was heading in the opposite direction.
Panday was said to be driving in the opposite direction
Eyewitness said that Panday, when he saw the vehicle in his path, opted to drive between the two approaching vehicles instead of being forced off the road. He reportedly took this course of action because the overtaking vehicle was speeding and had gone wide of the vehicle it was overtaking.
That was the big mistake. The three vehicles collided.
The injured persons were assisted to the hospital by a party of policemen who were passing the area when the accident occurred.
Investigations are ongoing.
