Popular Vreed-en-Hoop car dealer, Motieram Ramdin, was killed
around 15:00 hrs yesterday after a pickup he was driving at high
speed crashed near Crane, West Coast Demerara.
He was pronounced dead on arrival at the West Demerara Regional
Hospital.
Ramdin had been residing in the United States but returned to Guyana
for an intended brief stay, four days ago.
Vehicles-collided
An eyewitness, who assisted in removing the businessman from the
mangled vehicle, said that Motieram was not wearing a seatbelt and
was attempting to overtake the driver of another pickup, with whom
he was apparently racing, when the mishap occurred.
Police are said to be questioning a man in connection with the
crash.
Two eyewitnesses told Kaieteur News that they were sitting in an
area near Crane, West Coast Demerara, when they saw two pickups, one
black and the other grey, heading west on the public road at high
speed.
They said that the driver of the black pickup, who turned out to be
Ramdin, was attempting to overtake the other pickup when he drove
into the lane of an approaching vehicle.
Ramdin reportedly attempted to take evasive action but instead
swerved off the road and slammed into a plum tree.
One of the eyewitnesses said that he ran over to the pickup and saw
Ramdin, who was not wearing a seatbelt, lying motionless inside.
The eyewitness said he and the occupants of the other pickup
assisted in pulling the businessman out and placing him in the other
vehicle.
They then took Ramdin to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where
he was pronounced dead.
Ramdin is survived by five children, three of whom reside in Guyana.
Deowantie Ramdin, one of the dead man’s daughters, told Kaieteur
News that her father had only returned from the United States four
days ago. He was staying at relatives at La Jalousie, West Coast
Demerara.
According to Ms. Ramdin, her father had just left his Vreed-en-Hoop
business premises and was heading for Windsor Forest to see
relatives when the tragedy occurred.
